The FMCSA has started reporting driver examination results directly to State Driver’s License Agencies (SDLAs). The NRII final ruling requires all states to implement and comply with this new system by June 23, 2025.
The purpose of the NRII is to facilitate the electronic transmission of examination results (meets standards and does not meet standards) and additional information such as corrective lenses, hearing aids, medical exemptions, and skill performance evaluation certificates from examinations performed for commercial driver’s license holders and learner’s permit applicants from FMCSA’s National Registry to the SDLAs to be posted on the Commercial Driver’s License Information System driver motor vehicle record.

- Medical examiners are required to report examination results by the end of the following calendar day
- This timeline is now more critical than ever as states rely on this information for driver licensing
- Delayed reporting can result in driver license suspensions or downgrades
- The process from examination to state recognition may now take 3-5 days (or longer if corrections are needed)
